The Secret World of Guitar Chords – a Master Class with Joel Mabus

October 18, 2022 By admin

GLAMA is pleased to present an afternoon of learning, playing and listening with featured local artist, Joel Mabus.

When: Sunday, November 20th

Where: Kalamazoo Nonprofit Advocacy Coalition (First Baptist Church Bldg)
315 W. Michigan Avenue, Kalamazoo, MI

When:
1:00pm: Master Class and open jam
5:00pm: Concert

In this class, we will explore and explain the wonderful and often baffling world of guitar chords. Why do some chords seem to follow each other smoothly in a song, and other chords just clash? We will learn the code to unlock the formula that a chord’s name tells us. You may be comfortable with major, minor and seventh chords, but the Bm7b5 or the G6/9 are somewhat foreign. But they are harder to say than they are to play. If you feel you’ve been spinning your wheels lately, learning a few new chords or learning slightly altered chords is a great way to spice up your playing. We’ll learn some easy-to-finger authentic swing chords that deliver that cool sound for Bob Wills’s and Hank Williams’s songs. We’ll learn the best approach to playing bluegrass rhythm the right way. Exploring circle progressions for songwriting or arranging your own take on popular songs. All this and more with hands-on learning and take-home handouts.

TEACHING BIO

Joel has toured the major folk music venues all over North America, & has taught
guitar classes at:  Puget Sound Guitar Workshop,  California Coast Music Camp,
Summersongs at Ashokan, NY,  University of Massachusetts Summer Acoustic
Music Week,  Augusta Heritage in Elkins WV, and many other camps, workshops
and festivals. And for many years was the senior instructor at Elderly Instruments in Lansing MI. Mabus was elected to the Detroit Music Awards Hall of Fame in the year 2000.
